Why are most “healthy” seeded breads in Australia given German names?
The Germans have made something of an artform out of making bread (brot) – they have more than 300 varieties, and in particular healthy bread made from top quality rye flour. Their popularity in the United States has carried over to Australia (like many things) along with the German names. Retailers also exploit images of well-fed, healthy looking Germans traditionally dressed in lederhosen in front of brown farmhouses set in green pastures featuring quality cows – it all spells good health.
