Why are mentors assigned to beginning teachers?
• To support teachers new to the profession. • The state of NM mandates that a beginning teacher is mentored at least one year within his/her first three years of teaching. • In order for a Level I teacher to advance to Level II in the NM 3-tier licensure structure, proof of mentorship is required. • As a district, the goals of mentoring also include teacher retention and support in improving teacher practice.
