Whenever this argument erupts, I maintain that the whole assembly including the lid should be left in the lowered position. That way, the appliance doesn’t suit anybody and both genders are responsible for reconfiguring it for use, then returning it to its closed position after they are finished. And the side benefit is nothing accidentally falls in the toilet.
