Why are medical device makers trying to replace lead?
Lead currently presents health and disposal challenges to device manufacturers due to increasing regulation and perceived environmental risks. These factors, along with lead’s potential for future regulation under RoHS initiatives, are among the drivers for change in medical device and equipment design. While these regulations have yet to affect medical devices, manufacturers are seeking to find lead replacements where possible in advance of plans to strengthen the directive to a complete ban by 2010.
