Because so many needs that a relationship provides are unable to be attained. The need for visual and physical communication, the need for physical affection, the level and amount of communication that one desires, the need for companionship – going places and doing things together, the need for evidence of being someones one and only, the many subliminal cues which indicate someone is being honest, etc. The long distance relationship is based on the suspension of many of these needs, and an agreement on both individuals side to simply trust the other to wait for them. There is nothing preventing either party from finding another interest, while maintaining their profession of loyalty to the other party.
