Why are Locomotive Engineers called “Hoggers”?

0

David F is correct.Steam locomotives(especially freight) used to be called hogs. The term is still in use today and is given as a compliment to someone considered a good engineer. We have lots of engineers these days but not near as many hogheads.More than once i’ve heard someone ask somebody who their hoghead was and they would reply i just have an engineer today not a real hoghead.
