Why are library systems going to receive free CDs?
A. A settlement in a 43-state antitrust case related to the pricing of music CDs will result in a free distribution of 220,439 CDs to New York’s 23 public library systems. Q. What kind of CDs are they? A. The 220,439 CDs will include a total of 1,900 different music titles in 11 music genres: Rock, Country, Blues, Jazz, Roots, Classical, Latin, Soundtrack, Children, Christmas, and Other. Q. Are library systems the only ones who benefit? A. No. The distribution of over $75 million in free CDs nationwide is targeted at schools, libraries and other nonprofits. The nationwide settlement also included a direct cash distribution of over $44 million to individual consumers. The State Library has worked closely with the New York State Attorney General’s office to ensure that public library systems share in the free CD distribution. The 23 public library systems will receive 60 percent of New York’s share of the music CDs. The remainder will be distributed to schools. (See Chart Showing Final D
