Lego plastics are made from oil so naturally the rising price of oil has made legos far more expensive to manufacture than they used to be. On top of this rising oil prices has made transporting Lego bricks from the factory to your store far more expensive. Additionally many new lego kits are co-branded with other companies eg. Star Wars & Indiana Jones – Lucasarts, Batman – DC. Lego has to pay these companies a share of the profits, and the extra cost is passed down to the customer.

There aren’t a lot of off-brand legos (especially types that are of any quality, in my opinion), so they have a tight hold on the toy market and can overcharge- because legos are almost a staple of American childhood.

From your post, it says you have not touched any LEGO products since you were 6 – I am not sure how old you are now, but if you are 20 lets say, that is 14 years of not seeing price changes. There are a number of factors that drive prices, such as oil prices (LEGO bricks are made from ABS plastic which is an oil based product) , the world currency exchange rates (LEGO Corp. has manufacturing in numerous countries in the world, their headquarters are located in Denmark), rising costs, production, consumer demand, etc. In all seriousness, LEGO has lost money for a number of years, and is just beginning to make profit again after some serious financial woes. As for me, I started buying LEGO sets when I was 4 or 5 years old, that was in 1980. I am 33 now, and I have never really stopped buying LEGO products.
