Why Are Lascaux Caves So Famous?

0

The Lascaux caves, which are located in south-western France have a very unique and valuable claim to fame – these caves are adorned with mural paintings, which date back to prehistoric times, almost about 15000 years ago. In other words, the artistic evidence of the outset of European civilization is the main reason why the Lascaux caves are considered so famous and valuable. The caves were not discovered until recently in 1940 in the Dordogne region. The paintings of the cave are in a class of their own –surprisingly contemporary in nature- nevertheless holding fascinating evidence of the ancient times, the murals enunciating the scenes from those periods, containing vivid illustrations in the form of pictures of hunting expeditions, bulls, horses, deer and wild fowl. There is a speculative notion that the art was supposed to have a certain function – especially for the animal pictures, which were drawn to bring good luck and success for the hunters’ hunting expeditions.
