Why are Kings and Queens of Britain still numbered as if Britain is still England?
The way the numbering works is first, anyone prior to William the conqueror isn’t counted so if Prince William names his son Alfred he’d reign as Alfred the 1st even though there was an Alfred (the Great) a long time ago. Then they take the highest number, regardless of whether the higher number includes Scottish or English monarchs so if Prince William names his son Alexander he’d reign as Alexander IV as there were 3 prior Scottish kings named Alexander. In that situation there might be idiot English people that would insist on calling him Alexander the 1st because he’d be the 1st King Alexander to the English; this is what some idiot Scottish did with the current Queen because they said she was their 1st Queen Elizabeth. The Scottish weren’t being slighted; if the shoe was on the other foot and the Queen had a name only Scottish monarchs had used it would have gone the same way. I’m convinced Scottish like to see insults where there are none.
