It is a playwright’s worst nightmare and that is what makes is so humorous. The audience laughs in the wrong places, and make “disparaging” remarks but the mechanicals go one and the audience loves it. It is full of miscues, forgotten lines, and overacting. But, by the end, Shakespeare makes a point that the mechanicals, much like his own theatrical company, need the support of patrons to continue acting, however badly that acting is.
