Why are high cholesterol levels bad?
When LDL cholesterol levels are too high, the LDL tends to build up inside the lining of the blood vessels. These fatty buildups (atherosclerotic plaques) cause narrowing of the arteries and can rupture, causing blood clots to form that block blood flow and lead to heart attacks and strokes. Therefore, a high LDL cholesterol level is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke.
