Why are Hasselblad cameras considered so good?
Hi, Interesting question! 1. Made in Sweden – one of the highest cost of living countries – so actual costs are very high 2. Bullet-proof – almost. Other wise extremely robust 3. Lenses so sharp you could cut yourself on the images 4. 6×6, 4.5×6 or 35mm removable film backs, and polariod (for test shots before digital came along). Whatever format you want, just switch the back. The same for digital backs – they are available in a number of formats 5. The 500 series is probably the most iconic – NASA took it to the moon 6. Lenses have the shutter – not the camera. Why? Because you can sync flash at 1/500 second, which is >2x the current speed of a focal plane shutter in a DSLR (or analog SLR) 7. The digital backs are a small fortune! Why? Because the sensors are large (as others have said) and particularly because the production volumes are very small, compared say to an APS-C sensor, so economies of scale are minimal 8. Medium format is not about frame rate, its about capturing the 1 o
