Why are grants announced and presented at Walk Closing Ceremonies?
Unlike other Breast Cancer special events, the Avon Foundation announces and presents grants at the Closing Ceremony of each Avon Walk. These are financial donations that have been reviewed and approved by the Avon Foundation Board in advance of the actual Walk. Board meetings usually occur weeks before the individual Walks, before final fundraising totals are known, so at that time the Board commits only the early funds donated. These initial gifts are awarded to organizations and institutions in the Avon Walk geographic area at Closing Ceremonies to ensure that Walkers’ hard-earned dollars are put to good use immediately. Additional monies raised by each Walk, along with funds raised by other Avon Foundation activities, are combined and granted to breast cancer organizations in the Walk regions and throughout the country on an ongoing basis.
