The major goal is to obtain the complete sequences of as many genomes as possible. A catalog containing a description of the sequences of every gene in a genome is immensely valuable, even if at first the functions of many of the genes are unknown. The genome sequences therefore opens the way to a comprehensive description of the molecular activites of living cells and the ways in which these activites are controlled.
