Why are fruit juices in the Amber category?
Fruit juices which have 99% or more fruit juice can provide a range of nutrients including Vitamin C and folate, however, they lack the fibre of whole fruit and they are high in sugar. If fruit juice is consumed in excess, it can displace water, milk, and indeed whole fruit, detracting from a nutritious diet and potentially contributing excess kilojoules leading to problems such as overweight and obesity (Food for Health, NHMRC). Whole fruit is in the Green section, and in line with the Dietary Guidelines for Children and Adolescents in Australia, this strategy recommends water and reduced fat milk as the best drinks.
