Why are four letter words so disreputable – compared to five letter words?

I can quite understand the aversion to four letter words. Work, give, help, want etc are all words used by those wishing to deprive one of time and money. Whereas money, lover, dress (verb), sleep, dance, opera refer to the better things in life. Edit: A lover can be that person to whom one is not tied by marriage but is merely a source of pleasure. ‘Love’ however is so often a word of enslavement, enforced or artificial commitment used when its basic components of lust and affection have long gone. How often are telephone conversations ended with an enforced, meaningless ‘I love you’?
