Why are entertainment and sports so emphasized and so highly valued in North American culture?
I guess American history plays a role in such phenomenon. In the past, people worked hard all day and they are looking for ways to relieve themselves from their stress from their work and their family. As a result, people often look for different types of entertainment such as movies, music and sports to escape from reality. In the great depression, many businesses are not doing well but only the entertainment industry were still able to attract almost same number of people. I am sure some of us are not happy that entertainers are making more money that the many professionals out there but they are just the tools to attract people to spend. Like Chris Rock said in his stand up,” Shaq is rich but the guy who signed Shaq’s cheque is wealthy”.
