Why are electro/pneumatic instruments better than underwater testing?
One of the main advantages of using electro/pneumatic instruments for leak detection is that they are non-subjective. This means that results are repeatable and can be subject to statistical analysis. True, testing underwater will often reveal a leak but its appearance can take sometimes take a long time. The problem is thus in deciding how long to keep the test piece underwater. Most leaks detected will be ‘gross’ leaks i.e. large. Electronic instruments can detect very small leaks very quickly. Other problems associated with underwater testing are; wet components, spillage, and damaged or spoilt product.
