why are elections necessary for a democratic system?
Elections are not necessary for a democratic system. In a direct democracy issues such as proposed laws are voted on by the public. They do not need to elect representatives. So far, direct democracies have been rare because they only worked well in small city states. However, it remains to be seen if modern communications will allow direct democracy in larger nations at some point. Another type of democracy is one in which representatives are chosen at random. This is in theory just as democratic as as elections, but it has obvious drawbacks in a complex society.
