Why are Doc Martens so important?
Dr Martens have been a part of UK culture since there original release. They have been worn by skinheads, mods, football casuals, goths, grungers and many more besides. Doctor Martins are not specifically for any one group of people but for a culture as a whole. No sub-culture can claim them and nobody can knock their importance for this reason. Lets look at two Dr Marten wearing sub-cultures. Skinheads Skinheads although viewed by some as racist and violent actually came into being during the end of the Mod scene. As Mods became more and more consumerist, buying the latest trends and spending much of their money on fashionable clothing the Mod faction had a small rebellion from within. The working class mods could not afford to keep up with their middle class consumerist companions and because of this the working class mods felt undermined, this created the first emergence of skinheads or ‘hard mods’.
