Why are digital camcorders superior to traditional camcorders?
The answer to that depends greatly on the quality of the camcorders. High-quality analog (“traditional”) camcorders can produce much better image quality than inexpensive digital camcorders. In the end, it is the quality of the individual unit that determines how good a picture it will deliver in the end. And it is the quality of the image sensor that plays the most important role. There have been substantial improvements in imaging sensors over the past few decades, during which saticon and vidicon tubes have been replaced by CCD and CMOS image sensors. High-quality CCD sensors are used in professional equipment today, while the less expensive CMOS sensors are used in consumer camcorders. Semi-professional or prosumer camcorders may use either technology. Although CMOS sensors have improved a great deal since they were first introduced, CCD sensors retain their advantage in image quality. Consumer camcorders have greatly benefited from these technology developments, since the first di
