Why are dairy products the biggest manufactured product in New Zealand?
Simply, NewZealand has the best possible climate for dairy farming. Feeding cows on 100% pasture during peak production is extremely cost effective and the breed of rye grass most commonly used is very high in metabolisable energy (ME). Also dairy cows here are pasture fed 365 days a year. Although supplements are used (silage, straw etc.) these are very cheap to make as they are just unused pastures. New Zealand take advantage of this as most other countries do not have the advantage of 100% pasture feeding and must rely on the likes of grain to feed cows, which is very expensive.
