Why are cows milked so early in the morning?
The calves of dairy cows are taken away when they are still quite young, and if the mother is milked she may keep producing milk for a very long time. However, the milk that collects in her udder can make it swollen and painful if it isn’t taken out often enough. So the cows are milked early in the morning and late in the afternoon. They learn that milking takes away the discomfort of a very full udder and will walk to and from the milking sheds of their own accord, with no need to be rounded up.
