Why are computer monitors, circuit boards, and components a problem?
• Computer equipment has more than1,000 materials, many of which are highly toxic. • The cathode ray tubes (CRT) in computer monitors contain enough lead to pose health hazards to humans and animals. • Circuit boards, batteries, switches/housing and printed wiring boards contain mercury. • Chromium is used as corrosion protection of untreated and galvanized steel plates and as decorative and hardener for steel housing. • When these toxic metals accumulate in the environment they have a high acute and chronic toxic effects on plants, animals, and humans. • Toxic metals can cause damage to the central and peripheral nervous systems, blood system and kidneys. The Lincoln Landfill does not accept hazardous waste from business and industry. Households are exempt from this requirement. CRT’s and circuit boards contain toxic metals (e.g. lead, silver, and chromium) in them that they are considered a hazardous waste and banned from disposal in the landfill.
