Why are complex carbohydrates important?
Complex carbohydrates offer steadier levels of energy than do simple carbohydrates and have a less pronounced impact on blood sugar levels. Simple carbohydrates release sugar into the bloodstream very rapidly. Although this is beneficial for replenishing muscle sugar (glycogen) stores after an intense training session, it may not be a wanted effect at other times throughout the day. Consistent highs and lows of blood sugar levels may contribute towards fat storage and lethargy. Complex carbohydrates typically release sugar into the blood at a steadier pace which may result in more consistent energy levels and a lower likelihood that they will be stored as body fat (when used in moderation). As such, the complex variety should be the primary source of carbohydrates with meals each day.
