Why are collection elements wrapped in their own element?
The aim is to be as clear as possible about repeating elements, and the easiest way to accomplish this is to wrap them in their own structure and not mix them up with elements that only have a single occurrence. The same mechanism is used in many programming languages that allow the definition of data records/types.
