Why are Catholic priests not allowed to marry?
Although I am Anglican, my diocese had no school of it’s own, so we went to the Roman Catholic seminary in our city. In my very first class, on the very first day, the prof, who was the Dean of Theology and also a Roman Catholic priest said, “Priests should be able to marry. Here is where they got the interpretation wrong.” Quite a surprise! This was in a Bible interpretation class, and he went on to explain why he felt that way, as well as a lot of other things regarding Biblical interpretation. We Anglicans would often ask the RC’s that question, and for every answer they gave, we had a counter. Basically, there is no good reason beyond “because we said so.” Now, a celibate person can often accomplish great things, and I know even Anglican priests that have chosen to be so. It is not a bad choice at all – for those who can do it. But, even Paul says it is better to marry than burn.
