Why are carbohydrates found at the bottom of most food guide pyramids?
1. Because complex carbohydrates, such as those found in whole grains, fruits and vegetables, are an important source of nutrition. As an added benefit, these foods (in their natural, unadulterated state) may be good sources of vitamins A, several Bs, C, Iron, Potassium, Calcium, and many trace minerals required for good health. 2. Because 6 out of 11 people who sat on the USDA’s Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee had financial ties to various food industries, including several meat and dairy organizations. The USDA was founded to help farmers, not to promote health. It makes no difference to the profits of big agribusiness whether you eat white bread and pasta or wheat berries and brown rice, so our food pyramid doesn’t distinguish between them. If you’re looking for something based on scientific knowledge of nutrition, try the Mediterranean or Vegan food pyramids.
