Why Are Bull Fighters Capes Red?
The red cape used in bull fighting is referred to as a muleta. There is no scientific reason why the cape is red since bulls, in this case particularly and cattle in general, are colour-blind. The bull actually targets the movement of the cape, or other moving objects, and not the colour red. The red colour of the cape is more so a feature of tradition rather than practicality and has remained a tradition ever since. It may be said to represent blood or danger that is associated with entering the ring with the bull. Bull fighting is more of a spectator or entertainment event rather than a sport and attracts millions of spectators in Spain and Portugal where it forms a part of the local culture and identity. There are a number of traditions that describe how bull fighting originated a number of them trace it back to the Coliseum in Rome.
