Why are building entrances unlocked throughout the day?

MSU, unlike many other universities, has a number of classrooms in the residence halls that make it necessary to keep building entrances unlocked throughout the day. All entrances are locked at midnight, after which students must scan their MSU ID to enter the building. We are also in the process of installing card access readers to all student living wings. The new system will be operational in all halls fall 2011.
