Why are bryophytes known as the amphibians of the plant world?

Moss is a bryophyte. Like amphibians, it needs a large amount of moisture to survive. Too long away from moisture and it dies, like amphibians. In my work as a freshwater ecologist, I observed many species of bryophytes living at the waters edge and also completely submerged in some species. The only times I found moss away from water was in areas that recieved copious amounts of rain e.g rainforests, incidently where you also find a lot of frogs.
