Why are breast biopsies a risk factor for breast cancer?
It is important to point out that breast biopsies do not CAUSE breast cancer. On average, women who have had a breast biopsy have an increased risk of breast cancer. This is because some biopsy results indicate that a woman has the type of breast tissue that is more prone to develop cancer. Experts believe that the type of breast tissue that forms itself into suspicious lumps that require a biopsy is more likely to be tissue that will eventually develop breast cancer. However, most women who have had a biopsy never develop breast cancer.
