Why are bodies embalmed?
The ancient Egyptians were the first embalmers, mummifying approximately 4 million bodies from 6,000 B.C. to 600 A.D. Dr. Thomas Holmes (1817 – 1900) is generally considered the father of modern embalming. During the American Civil war, before today’s refrigeration facilities, embalming became popular to allow officers killed in battle to be returned home for burial.
