Why are beginning teachers assigned a mentor?
To support teachers new to the profession The state of NM mandates that BTs are mentored at least one year within his/her first three years of teaching. In order for a Level I teacher to move to Level II in the NM 3-tier licensure structure, proof of mentorship is required. As a district, the goals of mentoring also include teacher retention and support in improving teacher practice.
