Why are AVS programs all DOS based ?
• Despite the push for an all Windows compter environment, thousands of instrumentation and scientific applications still use DOS as the operating system of choice. There are several reasons it is better for our applications. 1. The integrity of the image data is highly maintained by using a direct from the scanner to memory technique. 2. The analysis can be done much faster and without the need for extensive memory requirements. 3. Most important, a mill is a production environment running 24 hours a day 7 days a week. The critical issue is up time. Maintaining the operation of the system with little or no problems that require special personel or vendor interaction is our goal. Windows installations can be very troublesome. If something happens to a Windows installation, all the programs that require it will not work. Our system will run under Windows or DOS. But more important, it can be run without Windows if for some reason Windows should stop operating. Troubledhooting system or
