Why are asphalt plants near urban centers?
Hot mix asphalt for paving is produced and laid hot, preferably about 300 degrees at the time of paving. It cannot be trucked long distances and still be usable for paving. Asphalt is needed for pothole repair and road resurfacing projects throughout the Washington Metropolitan Area. If asphalts plants were not nearby, repaving projects would be delayed or cost substantially more, and vehicle air pollution, traffic tie-ups and neighborhood cut-throughs would increase.
