Why are Americanas obsessed with chain restaurants???

Chain restaurants are universal surely. It is not just Americans who have them and that doesn’t make them obsessed. There are plenty of chain restaurants here in the UK, if you are in a strange town (our country) it is sometimes reassuring that you can go to (for instance) MacDonald’s and know it will be clean and eatable and that you can afford it! Some years ago my son visited Moscow and found it difficult to get food at all and if he did it seemed to consist of cabbage and bread. He actually queued in Moscow to go to MacDonald’s.

Because most Americans (and I am an American) are not seeking good food when they go out to dinner. They are seeking inexpensive food (like McDonalds) or football game food (like you get at Fridays) or kid friendly places. Half of them don’t ever cook and survive on frozen pizza and hot pockets when at home. In fact, my theory is that if you eat hot pockets at home, you are likely to be eating at Applebees or Fridays when you go out. If you are a scratch cook at home, you are less likely to frequent chain restaurants.

I think the foods in chain restaurants always are tasty and always are consistent… and we are creatures of consistency.. and they always carry comfort foods….

Advertising and the fact that they far outnumber ‘real’ food restaurants and are a lot cheaper too.
