Why are Albany and Millersburg partnering to develop a new water supply?
Albany and Millersburg began collaborating on water supply planning in the late 1980s. Millersburg began planning an independent water supply system in 1997. In August 2001, the mayors of both cities agreed that the communities should work together and both City Councils began meeting together to consider a joint project. The two Councils saw that the cities would save money and that the joint project provided opportunities to benefit the environment. By January, 2002, both Councils had agreed to combine resources for a joint water supply project that will meet the long-term needs of both communities. At present, the City of Albany owns, operates, and maintains the Lebanon diversion dam, head gates, canal, and water treatment plant, and sells water to Millersburg. The communities have agreed to jointly design, build, own, operate and maintain the new facilities. Three people from each community make up a committee to manage the joint project as it proceeds through implementation phases
