Why are adjuvants not always included in the formulations produced by the basic manufacturers?
• The application volume (mostly water) of an active ingredient may vary over a broad range from a few liters to 1500 L/ha.. As a consequence, the concentration of a built-in adjuvant will also vary when maintaining a fixed amount of formulated product per ha. This may result in inappropriate performance of the adjuvant. Therefore, achieving an optimal concentration of adjuvant by adding a tank-mix adjuvant is often preferred. • The wettability of a crop and its susceptibility to phytotoxic symptoms caused by adjuvants determines the type and amount of adjuvant to be included. In order not to limit the use of the formulated product, the manufacturer may decide not to build-in an adjuvant. • Adjuvants can exert specific functions as lowering the antagonistic effects of hard water. When using soft water; these adjuvants are not needed. • An adjuvant in the formulation of an active ingredient may result in crop injury and may create liability problems when the formulated product is mixed
