Why are abbreviations and acronyms underlined?
In an effort to make abbreviations and acronyms easier to understand without drawn out explanations we have included special HTML that displays the meaning in a tool tip. To activate this, hold your mouse cursor over any abbreviation or acronym that shows up with the gray dotted underline for a few moments. If the gray dotted underline is absent, or if you are using an outdated browser, this will not work. The text is a little smaller because that simply makes it easier to read. Full-size capital letter abbreviations can be disruptive in a sentence if they occur regularly, and with abbreviations like SGZ and SGYY littering this site, you can probably understand. HTML Autors, if you would like to include these tool tips in your own site, all you need to do is enclose abbreviations in the … tag and acronyms in the … tag. Include the title=”value” attribute, and set the value to the text you want inside the tool tip.
