Why are 128MB Smartmedia cards so expensive?
Smartmedia cards are more expensive on a cost-per-megabyte comparison because it is no longer mass produced. The only remaining source of new Smartmedia cards is from Samsung, who manufacture the flash memory chips used in Smartmedia cards. This drives up the price as less chips are being produced and less people demand them. The inventors of Smartmedia have replaced it with a new format known as xD Picture Cards or xD Cards for short. Smartmedia cards were predominantly used in digital cameras and music sampling devices at the height of their popularity.
