Why are 119 countries banning cluster bombs, yet the USA (amongst others) want to continue using them?
The USA is one of the largest manufacturers and sellers of cluster bombs. We generally don’t sign treaties that limit our use of weapons. Besides, if we sign the treaty, we are more vulnerable to adverse legal action by other countries if we end up using them. Mike S: You should know that one reason for the treaty is that cluster bombs often hang fire partially. After the battle or the war, civilians come back to the area and get killed or maimed. There are a lot of children victims of these. Especially under Bu–sh–, the USA sets itself up as exempt from what applies to other countries because of our superpower / world policeman status. Somehow that doesn’t carry much weight with the parents of the dead and maimed children.
