Why American women are still earning less than men in the same jobs?
A [Georgia Duerst-Lahti]: Women earn less than men for three main reasons: First, like most of the world, some jobs are far more likely to be held by women and some by men. Those jobs held by men are more valued and get more pay. So, as women move into these jobs, women’s pay goes up on average. Of course, when too many women go into a job, the pay often declines. This has to do with the perceived value of what women do and what men do. Over time this problem has gotten better but still exists. Now, women tend to make close to what men do in the same job, but job pay varies. Women are clustered in lower paying jobs so the average is lower. Second, despite laws that allow both women and men to take unpaid time off for work, women are still far more likely to care for children or other aged or ill family members.
