Why am I experiencing problems downloading files from WebCT using Internet Explorer 5.5, Service Pack 1?
A bug exists in Microsoft’s IE5.5 (SP1) web browser where web servers (such as the WebCT installation) that use a particular HTML command (Content-disposition: attachment) to force the user’s browser to download a file will not save the file correctly. Rather than save the file itself (for example an MS Word document) the browser will save the HTML source code of the page instead. For more details and a fix for this issue see the description at Microsoft’s Product Support Services site. Workaround: When you are first prompted to download a file in Internet Explorer 5.5: • Select ‘Open this file from its current location’; click OK. • You will then be prompted to save the file again. Select ‘Save this file to disk’; click OK. Solution: Microsoft has supplied a fix for this issue which can be found on their Product Support Services site. Apply this fix to your IE 5.5 SP1 browser.
