Why all the hand-wringing about 18 year old soldiers getting killed in action?

I’ll give you a TRUE example of the problem in the UK. An 18 year old returns from first deployment in Afghanistan. Goes to the local supermarket who refuse to sell him a tube of superglue because he’s “underage”. Ended up with my son having to go and buy for him. Ever since the “nanny state” in this country was given free rein over such issues as Health & Safety and education the age at which “childhood” ceases and adulthood begins has been steadily rising to the point of being ridiculous. This mentality has given rise to young adults being referred to as “children” and “under 25” signs appearing in shops. I joined HM Forces at 16. I deployed at 18 and nobody batted an eyelid. Nowadays you mention deploying at 18 and the nanny state brigade amongst us go into a seizure. Grow up people – let young adults do the same and make their own decisions. You can’t hold their hand forever!!
