According to Dr. Clinton Longenecker, a professor from University of Toledo, “Ineffective training has detrimental impact on the bottomline”.(Longenecker, 2008) He calls the problem the “Job Skills Gap Syndrome,” a condition that is spreading rapidly. The gap is the difference between an employee’s actual skills level and the skills needed to perform the job effectively. Based on research, among the causes of ineffectual training, respondents mentioned that it frequently is not a management priority (46%) and there are time constraints (42%); an over-reliance on trial-and-error learning or on-the-job training (39%); an assumption by managers that their employees already possess the necessary job skills (36%); and uncertainty as to what skills actually are needed to do the job and lack of qualified trainers or sufficient budget (34%).
