Why a Student Chapter of AAPG?
Initiative…that’s one reason organizing and running a student chapter is important. Students will self sort into those with “initiative” and those that just let things happen. Initiative means making things happen. Students, by creating a successful student chapter, will take on the leadership roles to set up meetings, build a program committee, set up a nominating committee, conduct an election of officers, create and develop a newsletter, run a field trip, organize a short course, and even to throw a party. The ‘initiative’ shown in these efforts identify future geology professionals that can make things happen, that can lead, can manage, can be creative and can improvise. These are important characteristics that are not necessarily taught in school, but are very important in job searches and in a young geologist’s career.
