Why a candy store?
“Because I love candy! My whole life, I’ve been able to sniff out candy stores. I mean, 10 years ago, I was on vacation in Egypt and managed to find the candy stores.” Some might think, in these anti-carb times, that it’s a risky venture. “Well, I see candy as a healthier vice than smoking or drinking. With candy, it’s easy to do portion control. Some people might sit down and eat a box of doughnuts or supersize fries, but they won’t devour a five-pound bag of gummy bears. The irony is that healthy people are our biggest customers–especially women in their twenties and thirties. It’s more than just a sugar fix. I think it’s because candy is a comfort food; there’s a sense of nostalgia to it. For a lot of us, the first thing we bought with our own money when we were kids was candy.” How do you come up with ideas? “I am constantly inspired by the things around me–even when I’m just window shopping.
