Whos afraid of the little Red Wolf?
Forty-one red wolf puppies have been born this year at the 152,000-acre Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge in Dare and Hyde counties. “It’s been a really productive spring and early summer for the Red Wolf Recovery Program,” says Art Beyer of the refuge. Actually, the male pup shown here (click to enlarge) was born at the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago, Illinois. But he and three female pups are on their way, after thorough check-ups, to join adopted sisters and brothers in the recovery program at the Alligator River Refuge. Northeastern North Carolina is the only place in the world where red wolves still roam free in their native habitat.
